THE
BOND AND COVENANT of marriage was established by God in creation, and
our Lord Jesus Christ adorned this manner or life by his presence and
first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. It signifies to us the
mystery of the union between Christ and his Church, and Holy Scripture
commends it to be honored among all people. |
Old Testament Lections Select one of the following as the first reading: A reading from the Song of Solomon My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the dove is heard in our land; the fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned. A reading from the Genesis In those days, God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. A These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they
were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb
of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to
rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But
there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the
ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living
soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in A reading from Tobit Then began Tobias to say, Blessed art thou, O God of our fathers, and blessed is thy holy and glorious name for ever; let the heavens bless thee, and all thy creatures. Thou madest Adam, and gavest him Eve his wife for an helper and stay: of them came mankind: thou hast said, It is not good that man should be alone; let us make unto him an aid like unto himself. And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lush but uprightly: therefore mercifully ordain that we may become aged together. |
