Sassetta: Journey of the Magi, 1435

The Itinerary
From the Anglican Breviary

To be said by one alone, if he have no companions, or by one with those who are to be his companions on the journey.

Ant. May the Almighty and merciful Lord direct us.

The Song of Zacharias
Benedictus Domnus, Deus Israel. Luke 1.68

BLESSED be the Lord God of Israel; * for he hath visited and redeemed his people ;

2 And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, * in the house of his servant David ;

3 As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began ;

4 That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us.

5 To perform the mercy prom-ised to our forefathers, * and to remember his holy Covenant;

6 To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, * that he would give us ;

7 That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies * might serve him without fear ;

8 In holiness and righteousness before him, * all the days of our life.

9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways ;

10 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people * for the re-mission of their sins,

11 Through the tender mercy of our God; * whereby the Day-Spring from on high hath visited us ;

12 To give light to them that sit in darkness, f and in the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

13 Glory be to the Father, etc.

Ant. May the Almighty and merciful Lord direct us into the way of peace and prosperity : and may the Angel Raphael go with us on the way, that we may return to our home in peace, joy, and safety. (Alleluia.)

Lord, have mercy upon us. -- Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which words are said aloud, and the rest secretly to

V. And lead us not into temptation.
R. But deliver us from evil.

V. 0 God, save thy servants.
R. Who put their trust in thee.

V. Send us help from thy sanctuary.
R.
And strengthen us out of Sion.

V. Be unto us, 0 Lord, a strong tower.
R. From the face of the enemy.

V. Let the enemy have no advantage of us.
R. Nor the son of wickedness approach to hurt us.

V. Blessed be the Lord day by day.
R. May the God of our salvation make our journey prosperous.

V. Shew us thy ways, 0 Lord.
R. And teach us thy paths.

V. 0 that my ways were made so direct.
R. That I might keep thy statutes.

V. The crooked shall be made straight.
R. And the rough places plain.

V. God shall give his Angels charge over thee.
R. To keep thee in all thy ways.

V. Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto thee.

V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

O GOD, who madest the Children of Israel to pass dry-shod through the midst of the Sea, and who by the leading of a star didst open to the three Wise Men the way unto thyself : grant us, we beseech thee, a prosperous journey and calm weather, that, attended by thy holy Angel, we may happily reach the place whither we would go, and finally attain to the haven of eternal salvation.

O GOD, who didst bring thy servant Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldees, and didst preserve him unhurt through all the ways of his pilgrimage : we beseech thee that thou wouldest vouchsafe to protect us thy servants. Be unto us, 0 Lord, a support in our setting out, a comfort by the way, a shadow in the heat, a covering in the rain and cold, a conveyance in weariness, a protection in adversity, a staff in slippery paths, and a port in shipwreck; that, thou being our Leader, we may prosperously reach the place whither we would go, and at length return again to our home in safety.

ASSIST us mercifully, 0 Lord, in these our supplications and prayers, and dispose the way of thy servants towards the attainment of everlasting salvation : that, among all the changes and chances of this mortal life, we may ever be defended by thy most gracious and ready help.

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that thy household may walk in the way of salvation : and by following the exhortations of blessed John the Forerunner, may surely attain unto him whom he foretold, Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

V. Let us go forth in peace.
R. In the Name + of the Lord. Amen.

AT THE JOURNEY'S END thanksgiving should be offered, to which end may be said--

Ant. Forget not all his benefits.

Psalm 103
Benedic, anima mea
See Anglican Breviary, p. F150.

Ant. Forget not all his benefits, even the many good things of the Lord, * who saveth thy life from destruction. (Alleluia.)

V. The Catholic Faith is this : That we worship.
R. And that we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity.

V. Let us bless the Father and the Son, with the Holy Ghost.
R?. Let us praise him and magnify him for ever.

V. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious.
R. And his mercy endureth for ever

Let us pray.
O GOD, whose mercies cannot be numbered, whose goodness passeth man's understanding : we render humble and hearty thanks to thy most gracious Majesty for the gifts that thou hast bestowed upon us , humbly beseeching thy mercy, that like as thou hast as at this time heard the prayers of them that call upon thee, so thou wouldest hereafter evermore dispose the way of thy servants towards the attainment of everlasting life.

O GOD, who by the grace of thy Holy Spirit dost endue the hearts of thy faithful people with the most excellent gift of charity : we beseech thee to keep us thy servants, for whom we implore thy mercy, both outwardly in our bodies and in-wardly in our souls ; that we may love thee with all our hearts, and with pure affection perform such things as are acceptable in thy sight.

MOST gracious Lord, whose mercy is over all thy works : we praise thy holy Name that thou hast been pleased to conduct thy servant in safety, through the perils of his way ; who now desireth to return his thanks unto thee in thy holy Church. May he be duly sensible of thy merciful providence towards him, and ever express his thankfulness by a holy trust in thee, and obedience to thy laws. Through.

Let us bless the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

Benediction
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore.
R. Amen.
