Sunday Morning Discussion Group

EARLY each Sunday morning this discussion group meets in the undercroft from 9:00 to 9:45 to discuss topics selected according to the interests of those who participate.

The group explores such matters as the Valiant Women in the Bible: From Miriam, Sister of Moses and Aaron, to Mary, Mother of God. Their guiding text was Proverbs 31:10-31, the Lesson read at Mass celebrating a Holy Woman Not a Virgin or Martyr (Anglican Missal, p. F44). In the opening sentence of this text—"Who can find a virtuous woman?"—the term "virtuous," chosen by the translators of the venerable King James Bible, means stalwart or stouthearted. The moral overtones of the word in contemporary usage have accumulated over the years since the time of James I.

Another topic explored by the group was the Rosarium Virginis Mariae, a letter of Pope John Paul II in which he explained how the Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart of Christocentric prayer. With the inclusion of the Mysteries of Light, "it has all the depth of the Gospel Message in its entirety." In the weeks to come, the group plans to explore the Pope's complete letter.

The Sunday Morning Discussion Group is currently on break. If you would like to paraticipate in the leadership of this group, please contact Fr. Lane or Fr. Sam at 202-347-8161 or ascensionandsaintagnes@verizon.ne.
